Use your own domain

Put your website on your own address, like www.yourbusiness.com, instead of the free subdomain.

Every site gets a free address on our domain. On Pro and Growth you can also use a domain you own, such as www.yourbusiness.com or yourbusiness.com. HTTPS is set up for you.

Before you start

  • Buy the domain from any registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google, Cloudflare and so on) if you haven't.
  • Decide which address customers should use. A www address (www.yourbusiness.com) is the easiest: it takes one CNAME record. A bare domain (yourbusiness.com) takes an A record instead.

Connect your domain

  1. Click Website in the menu. The Domain box is at the top of the editor.
  2. Type your address in Your own domain (optional), for example www.yourbusiness.com.
  3. The box shows the exact record to add, with its Type, Name / host and Points to value.
  4. Click Save domain settings. We check your DNS straight away. Until it points at us, the domain shows Waiting for DNS.
  5. Sign in to your registrar and open the DNS settings for your domain.
  6. Add the record shown in the app:
  • For a www address: a CNAME record. The name (or host) is www; the value (or target) is the address shown in the app.
  • For a bare domain: an A record. The name (or host) is @; the value is the IP address shown in the app. We recommend also adding www as a CNAME to the address shown, so both work.
  1. Remove any other A, AAAA or CNAME records for the same name (an old website's records, or the registrar's "parked" page).
  2. Back on the Website page, click Check now.

When your domain points at us, the tag changes to Connected. We set up HTTPS the first time someone visits, and your site loads on your domain. We also re-check automatically whenever you open the Website page.

If it says something's wrong

The yellow box under your domain says exactly what we found, for example:

  • No DNS record found yet: the record isn't there, or it hasn't spread yet. DNS changes usually show within an hour, and can take up to a day.
  • Points to another address: an old record is still there, or the value was mistyped. Fix it to match the value shown in the app.
  • Also has an IPv6 (AAAA) record: delete the AAAA record for that name.
  • CNAME to another address: change the CNAME's value to the address shown in the app.

Tips

  • Keep your free subdomain. It keeps working alongside your own domain.
  • Make sure the site is published. See Edit your website.
  • Your free address can be changed on any plan in the same box, under Your free web address.
