See what a job made (job costing)

Revenue minus labor and expenses, worked out for every job as your team tracks time.

Job costing shows whether a job made money. It takes what you charged, subtracts your team's time and the expenses tied to the job, and shows the profit and margin.

Where to find it

Open a job in Work → Jobs. The Job costing card sits under the line items. You need a role that can see prices.

It shows:

  • Revenue: the job's total before tax. Once you've invoiced the job, it uses the invoice (marked invoiced).
  • Labor: hours tracked on the job × each person's hourly cost. Breaks don't count.
  • Expenses: everything logged against the job.
  • Profit and the margin percentage, plus a bar showing the split.

Below that you'll see each person's hours on the job and the list of expenses.

Set it up

  1. Open Settings → Team & roles and edit each person.
  2. Enter their Hourly cost: what an hour of their time costs you, wage plus overhead.
  3. Have your team clock in to the job, or to its visits. See Time tracking and timesheets.
  4. Log materials and other costs against the job. See Log expenses and receipts.

If some time has no hourly cost, the card warns you how many hours aren't counted.

Shortcuts on the card

  • Clock in starts your timer on this job.
  • Expense adds an expense already tied to this job.
Tip: The pay report uses each person's Pay rate; job costing uses their Hourly cost. Set the hourly cost a little higher than the wage to cover payroll taxes, insurance and vehicles.
